Mrs. Clara Hungerford

"Mrs. Clara B. Hungerford, widow of the late E. M. Hungerford, died at the family home on Hazelmere Avenue of Friday, Jan. 29th, 1921, in the 87th year of her age. She has been ill for the past year or more and had been confined to her bed for the most of that time. Mrs. Hungerford was one of our oldest and most esteemed residents. 
   She was the daughter of Charles and Moroa Roberts and was born at Milo Center, Yates County, in this state, on Aug. 24th, 1834. When she was but six weeks of age, her parents removed to Portageville, Livingston County, where her girlhood was passed. She came to this town in 1858 to keep house for her grandfather, James Mann, who resided on the farm now occupied by Fred R Meyers.
   She was married to E. M. Hungerford on Feb. 5th, 1862, at Portageville, the ceremony being performed by Rev. E. W. Kellogg of that place.
   The couple made their home for many years on the homestead farm of Farmersville where the write has many times enjoyed their generous hospitality in a household rendered doubly pleasant by the loving care and pleasant disposition of the mother.
   Twenty five years ago, they came to this village and purchased the pleasant residence which has since been the family home. Mrs. Hungerford was a woman of intelligence and culture with whom it was a pleasure to converse and her interest in public affairs continued active until her death. She possessed a large circle of friends who loved her for her many womanly virtues and who will regret her death, although in the fullness of years.
   Mrs. Hungerford is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Geo L. Napier and Miss Maroa N. Hungerford, both of this village. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Louisa Allen, of Geneva, Ohio.
   The funeral services were held from her late home on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Geo. L. Parry of the Franklinville Baptist Church officiating. The burial was by the side of her husband in Maple Grove Cemetery."

 


Mrs. Clarissa Watson

"Mrs. Clarissa Watson, a well known and esteemed resident of this town, died on Sunday, Dec. 26th, 1926, at the result of a shock suffered a few days previously. The funeral services were held from her late home at Pleasant Valley on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. A. J. Bellman of the Primitive Mission church officiating assisted by Rev. E. B. Bedell of Springville. Burial in Maple Grove.
   Mrs. Watson was the daughter of Chester and Clarissa Moon Ashcraft, and was born on the old farm at Pleasant Valley on April 24th, 1851. her father came here from Northfield, Vt., in March, 1816, with his father, Elijah T. Ashcraft, who was one of the half dozen earliest settlers of the town and was prominent in its affairs for many years. Her maternal ancestor, Almond Moon, was also a pioneer of the town and both he and E. T. Ashcraft were deacons of the early Christian Church.
   The deceased was married to LaRay Watson of East Machias at Arcade on September 11th, 1873. Rev. Abner Merrill of the Baptist church officiating. For somefe years they resided at East Machias, one year at Elton and for a short period at Masonville, but for over forty years the homestead farm at Pleasant Valley has been the family home. Mr. Watson died on Feb. 8th, 1920. After which she resided on the farm alone until the past year, during which time, owing to failing health, she has made her home with Rev. A. J. Bellman and family.
   No children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Watson. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Betsey Vaughan, of Sandusky, now in her 83rd year and the only survivor of the Chester Ashcraft family, and many more distant relatives.
Mrs. Watson was a faithful member of the Primitive Mission Church. She was highly esteemed in this vicinity where she had resided for so many years and her departure will be mourned by a large circle of friends."

 


Mrs. Lydia Rice

"Mrs. Lydia Rice passed to the Great Beyone on Tuesday evening, February 22, 1927.
   Grandma Rice, as she was called by the whole community, was born in the town of Yorkshire, February 20, 1840. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Richards.
   At the age of nineteen she was married to Mr. Clark Rice of Ashford. To them were born three children, Elmer E., and Earl A. of Riceville. A daughter, Clara, passed away in childhood at the age of three years.
   Mrs. Rice was the last charter member of the M. E. Church of Riceville and always a very active member of the same until hailing health prevented.
   The Pastor and his family were always welcome at her home as her own family, and many a burden has she lifted from the shoulders of the Pastor's wife.
   For several years she has been too feeble to attend church but has enjoyed the church services over the radio in her home.
She was a consistent Christian, a devoted mother, aloving grandmother, and the esteem in which she lived was shown by the large attendance at her funeral. On Friday, Feb. 25, she was laid at rest in the cemetery at Thomas Corners by the side of her husband who preceded her twenty-four years ago.
   Those present at the funeral from out of town were Mrs. Effie Leonard of Jamestown, Harry Leffingwell of Elton, Mrs. Hattie Canfield and son, Samuel, and Mrs. Maude Holland of Delevan, Mr. and Mrs. John Heidel, Mrs. Katheryn Cagwin, Mrs. John Pierce, and Mr. and Mrs. George Hall of Machias, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Adams of East Aurora, Mrs. Geo. Wheeler and grandmother, Mrs. L. L. Day of Dunkirk, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hadley, Mrs. Neil Hadley, Mrs. Alice Canfield, Mrs. E. F. Hammond, Mrs. Lucy Emerson and son, Arnold of Springville, Mrs. Chester Ehmann of West Valley and Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Bissell of Fairport.

 


Ulmer-Proctor

"A beautiful home wedding occurred at high noon Wednesday, the 11th, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Proctor at West Valley when their youngest daughter, Miss Ruth, was united in marriage to Albert Ulmer of Ellicottville, oldest son of George Ulmer.
   The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. Rosenthal, Miss Clara Truby of Olean played the wedding march. At the appointed time the Wedding party took their places under a pink arch from which was suspended white bells, and a banking of potted plants, ferns and lilies. The bride wore a dress of white crepe-de-chine trimmed with white sating and silver lace, and wore a corsage bouquet of sweet peas. They were attended by Miss Mabel Proctor, sister of the bride, and Clarence Ulmer, brother of the groom. After the ceremony an elaborate wedding dinner was served.
   The misses Erma Ehman, Louella Ehman, Clair Holland and LeOra Peabody, members of the bride's Sunday school class, acted as waiters.
   The guests were Mr. and Mrs. George Ulmer and Clarence, Oliver, and Laray Ulmer of Irish Hill, parents, brothers and sister of the groom; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Groff Jr., Mr. and Mrs. John Proctor and family, Miss Ella Kahler and Mrs. J. Rosenthal.
   The high esteem in which the young people are held was shown by the many beautiful and useful presents received, comprising furniture, china, cut glass, silverware and linen, and a check for $100 from the groom's father. About 20 young ladies of the bride's Sunday school class, who were invited for supper, also gave them a handsome piece of cut glass.
   After April 15th the will be at home to their many friends at Ellicottville, N.Y."

 


Mrs. Olivia Patterson

"Mrs. Olivia Patterson, one of Delevan's oldest and most respected citizen's, passed away early Friday morning, April 8th, following an illness of pneumonia, at the age of 79 years, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mae Thompson.
   The funeral was held at the M. E. church of which she was a member, Sunday at 2:30 p. m., Rev. Wilson of Warsaw, a former pastor of the church officiating.
   She leaves to mourn their loss, one daughter, Mrs. Mae Thompson, a grandson, Ralph Thompson, one brother, Frank Wheeler, and a host of friends who join with us in extending to the bereaved ones our deepest sympathy in their time of sorrow."

 


Hannah Smith

"Hannah Smith was born in the town of Ashford on February 19, 1854, daughter of Colonel and Polly Kellogg Fuller. At the age of 16 she was married to Charles Smith, a cheese maker, Mr. and Mrs. Smith lived in the White School House community for many years. About eight years ago they moved to the small farm in the town of Concord, formerly the home of Mrs. Smith's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Kellogg. Mrs. Smith died at her home on Friday, April 1, following a stroke. Funeral services at the home on Monday. Burial in Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Smith is survived by husband, son, grandson, granddaughter and three great-grandsons."

 


Clark Cradler

"Clark Cradler, a former well-known resident of this vicinity died at his home at Cadiz on Tuesday morning after a severe illness from pneumonia, aged 62 years. The funeral services are being held this afternoon from the Franklinville Methodist Church.
   Among those in attendance from this place are Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Wells, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Newton, Mrs. R. N. Johnston, Mrs. Henry Robeson, Mrs. O. E. Phillips, Mrs. B. C. Snyder, and Mark Williams and family."

 


Frances Winona Hickey Robinson

"One of the saddest deaths in the community within recent times was that of Winona Robinson, who succumbed to pneumonia on Wednesday March 23rd, 1927 at 12:30 p. m. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church at Delevan, on Saturday, March 26th, at 1:00 p. m. by Rev. John E. Whitney, assisted by Rev. McIntosh.
   The last rites were largely attended by relatives and friends from the surrounding county and a wealth of beautiful flowers gave mute evidence of the popularity of the deceased and kindly sympathy to the bereaved.
   Winona Hickey was born on May 30, 1898, in the town of Centerville, Allegany County. There she spent the first part of her life and completed her first two years of High School.
   In 1915, she came to Delevan and completed her high school course. Later she attended seven summer sessions at the Buffalo Normal.
   She taught two years in the Block and this year would have been ended her seventh year on the Lake Road.
   Winona Hickey was united in marriage to McKinley Robinson on June 25, 1924.
   She was a devoted wife and daughter, a loving sister and a true friend. Her home was ever open to everyone and there her friends always found smiles and words of welcome.
   She is survived by her husband, father and mother, three sisters, three brothers and a host of friends.
   Winona Robinson familiarly known to her intimate friends as 'Nonie,' was well and favorably known to a large circle of friends.
   Everyone loved her as she loved everyone. Her presence was a beautiful song. Her passing leaves dull sorrow which is softened by many pleasant memories.
   On Wednesday occurred a tragedy which, while not unexpected, stirred the hearts of all. Yet would would call her back to Life's Trials? Backward? Nay, onward, for
'To her death came, no conqueror in the end, She merely smiled to greet another friend."
   Those who attended the funeral from out-of-town were: Miss Dora Vedder, Mrs. Jessie Hyland, Mrs. Ruth Pomeroy, Mrs. Agnes Swift, Mrs. Robert Healey, Mrs. Emma Morgan, Peter Scheid, Mrs. Frank Bond from Buffalo, Mrs. Otto Willis and daughter Lillian of Woodlawn; Miss Edna Strif of Springbrook; Mr. and Mrs Robert Lewis of Rochester, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Finn, Miss Margaret McCarns of Olean, John McCarn and family, Will Quant, Mrs. Rose McCarthy, Mrs. Joe Curtis, Miss Mary Shay, Mrs. John McCarthy, Kate Russell and Neal Hickey, Will Gayford and family, Jessie VanName and wife, Clarence Armison and four sons, Miss Bessie Toltere from Fillmore; Stanley Vosburg from Pike; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Strait, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Burdick, Miss Emma Robinson of Bradford."

 


Mrs. Mary E. Potter

"Mrs. Mary E. Potter, wife of Ward Potter and a life long resident of this town, died at the Higgins Memorial Hospital at Olean on Monday, Dec. 6th. About two weeks previously she underwent an operation at the hospital but it proved of no avail. The remains were brought to this place where funeral services were held this afternoon from the home of her sister, Mrs. Wm. Cashore. Rev. A. M. Dietterich officiated, assisted by Rev. John M. Williams. The burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.
   Mrs. Potter was 44 years of age. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Toner, well known residents of this village. She is survived by her husband and two sons, Dana, aged 15 years and Everett, aged 11 years. She also leaves her aged parents, three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Cashore and Mrs. Carl Pollard of this village and Mrs. Floyd Pennell of Salamanca and two brothers, Robert A. Toner of this town and Harold P. Toner of Shinglehouse, Pa."

 


Hitchock-Pratt

"Elwin Person Hitchcock of Delevan and Miss Iva May Pratt of Franklinville were married at Sardinia by Rev. F. W. Bolender at his home on Monday.
   The attendants were Miss Elsie A. Gross of Franklinville, bridesmaid, Claude Rowland, best man."
